Sondrestrom Lidar Operation Log

Operator(s) : E.Guðmundsson, J.Jørgensen
Purpose : Routine data collection-stratallert
Date(s) : 010222 - 010223
File(s) : L102222 - L102231
Comments : At 01:43 UT A sporadic Na appeared at 110km.

NOTE! temperature instabilty in the Harris room caused by warm glacier wind.
Regulation scheme out of regulation range.
Temperature reached 32 degC. This rise in temperature was reflected in the
temperature in the laser room itself where the temperature reached 26.5 deg C.
The wavelength stability of the dye laser as read from the wavemeter was stable
but
a wavelength sweep at the end of the run was done to ensure that the sodium
miximum indication from the wavemeter had not chanqged. The result was rather
disapointing as the maximum sodium had moved by -2pm. So even though the
wavemeter indicated stable wavelength output the waveleght had drifted by -2pm.

L10222221:51:46There is a nipple protruding from the sodium layer at 100km99660EG

L10222222:44:22UPS ! A small temperature problem in the Harris room.94470EG
The fixed (non regulated heat sources) 3kw were putting
to much heat out so that the regulated cold air delivery from the
outside was not enough to keep the room at setpoint.
The temperature had reached 32deg C when I noticed and
unplugged the heat sources the temperature is falling, but
is going to take some time before things stablilize at setpoint
or 23-24deg C. Not enough ! Outside air to warm to regulate by.
L10222223:29:26Sodium HG adjusted91140EG
L10222223:50:46Tweeked the sodium convergence to if I could get any 90450EG
improvement.
L10222223:58:43It did improve things!90330EG
L10222200:07:22changed sodium channel chopper delay from 3925us to 388592910EG
thus psuhing the chopping altitude up by 6km
L10222201:07:40incremented95600EG
L10223001:43:38There is something at 110km on the sodium, like a 91260EG
seperate sodium layer starting at 105km and ending at 115km9117
L10223001:53:14I think I can safely say that this is a sporadic Na event92730EG
L10223001:59:58The layer is desending and getting stronger91540EG
L10223002:41:05There is soem strange background comming in the rayleigh data96280EG

L10223002:56:45Noise gone in the Rayleigh. This was my fault a new fan caued93370EG
the noise (electrical in nature)
L10223002:59:28The sodium counts have fallen quite a bit. This may be due 90750EG
to the temperature instability that we have observed tonight
L10223003:06:52doing a sodium max seek.92530EG

the unfortunate temperature drift.9232
L10223003:42:57It looks as if the drop in sodium counts is real and not a 94160EG
system artifact caused by teh temperature drift.
